What appears to be a lovely flowering desert plant is actually a colorized electron microscopy image of a metal alloy. The material is being studied by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory scientists as a new electrode through which current flows for sodium-ion batteries. The lab’s work could lead to cheaper, higher-capacity batteries for storing electricity generated by intermittent sources like wind or solar generators.
